“No, Father, we’re not using that design,” I said, sick of having this argument again and again.

“I gave you the reins under the strict provision you use—”

“The only provision you made was to acquire the plot of land you approved of on which to build,” I said, my voice firm.

My father had finally capitulated and turned over the company—minus the fancy turning-over soiree.

I was now CEO, and Emre was off to America, “finding himself.” Getting as far away from our father as possible to be himself. And hopefully laying some ground for KI in America.

I don’t blame him for wanting to leave. The nation of Turkey may have been more liberal in its general acceptance of homosexuality. But in the nation of Baris Kemal, there was zero tolerance. I may have had my own issues with Emre, but I supported his decision to leave.

“Don’t try me, boy. I made that company, and I made you,” he sneered. “I can come back anytime, and you know it. The board won’t argue if I come walking through that door.”

Anger bubbled in my chest, and I felt the blood rising up my neck. Not two days after acquiring Kemal Industries, he was threatening to take it away from me. Was nothing ever going to be mine?

He’d been holding KI over my head since I went to college. I wanted to study architecture. He only agreed to my taking classes if I also agreed to a business degree.

My father didn’t know I’d been making moves to replace several board members who weren’t leaning in my direction and courting the more liberal-minded ones.

I’d planned to steer this company into developing new buildings versus acquiring fully established businesses. He knew it. And he didn’t like it. Had done everything he could to prevent it.

“Don’t threaten me, old man. I jumped through your hoops, and I danced to your tune. It’s time for a new way of doing business,” I said, throwing down the gauntlet.

“I’m warning you, Deniz, you get the ground broken for that hotel, or I’m going to make moves,” he said, promptly hanging up.

I gently set the phone on the receiver and pressed the button for my secretary. “Aysun, if my father calls in again, tell him I’m not here.”

“Yes, Mr. Kemal. Anything you want, sir,” she said, her voice low and seductive.

I sighed.

A new position, new office, new duties…naturally came with a new secretary. This one my father had chosen two years ago. She was accustomed to being of “assistance” in any way…anyone desired. My father would’ve been more suited to running a brothel than a business. I wasn’t looking forward to establishing relationships with his former business partners. They’d undoubtedly expect a certain amount of “accommodation” of an intimate variety.

No more. Not my Kemal Industries. My father’s backward ways of sleaze and grease were going to end. Those tactics had limited us to Istanbul and the more conservative and, thus, old-fashioned customers.

He didn’t understand the up-and-coming trends that would surge KI outside Istanbul into an international powerhouse.
